Colours of San Cristóbal de las Casas, and other works feature a series of photographs taken in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico. The show also includes sculptures by Mexican artist Ulises Resendiz, alongside a selection of previous photographic works.
My trip to Mexico began as a way to help a friend set up a not-for-profit café in San Cristóbal de las Casas. While there, I started taking photos on my iPhone 13 Pro — not with an exhibition in mind but to record my surroundings. I was drawn to the colour, architecture, families, and strong sense of community that give the town its authentic character. I hoped to capture an honest glimpse of daily life. When printed, the images revealed a warmth and connection I hadn’t expected — a reflection of people and place, in the unique and vibrant colour palette of San Cristobal.
Victoria Wilson has long been drawn to photography and travel, using her camera to explore people, places, and culture. Later in life, she pursued this interest formally, completing a Diploma of Photo-imaging at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2022. Her studies strengthened her skills in composition, colour, light, and visual storytelling, and deepened her understanding of how these techniques can add meaning and atmosphere to an image. Her work reflects a curiosity about new destinations and a focus on the quiet connections between people and their surroundings.
My work draws inspiration from Alebrijes, the vividly coloured, fantastical creatures of Mexican folk art that merge mythology and imagination. Traditionally crafted from papier mache or wood, these hybrid beings embody transformation and wonder.
Building on this tradition, I create my own creatures by blending animal, human, plant, and object elements, exploring the natural and surreal boundaries. Through the addition of textiles and tactile materials, I introduce fur-like textures that highlight their animal qualities and bring a sense of life and movement to each piece.
These works are an invitation into a world where identities shift, myths evolve, and imagination takes physical form: a celebration of cultural heritage and personal storytelling.
Ulises Resendiz is a symbolist visual artist from Mexico, now based in St Kilda, Melbourne. Working across watercolour, acrylic, and sculpture, Resendiz experiments with bright colours and dreamlike imagery to explore the coexistence of opposites: joy and sorrow, beauty and strangeness, the real and the impossible. His visual language draws on a rich tapestry of personal symbolism, where animals, plants, and cultural motifs intertwine to reflect both his Mexican heritage and Australian surroundings. Through this blending of influences,
Resendiz creates works that are once vibrant, emotional, and deeply introspective, inviting viewers into a world of transformation and imagination.
