Richard Butler Bowdon ' Ungeziefer'

UNGEZIEFER-1-1600x

10 – 23 September 2026

Art Brut is a term invented by the artist Jean Dubuffet to denote Art made outside standard

curatorial or historical perspectives, such as graffiti, child art or art by those experiencing adverse mental health/psychiatric conditions.

Richard Butler Bowdon’s body of work displays a distinct affinity with Franz Kafka’s German-language fiction piece ‘Metamorphosis’, where the protagonist changes into an insect, or more specifically, ‘Das Ungeziefer’ (monstrous vermin).

This body of work marks a departure from Butler Bowdon’s prior dozen or so years working in the realm of the International/African art scene, mainly exhibiting with First Floor Gallery Harare (Zimbabwe) and Ebony Curated (Capetown/South Africa).
